Mahaparinirvana Temple, Parinirvana Stupa
Mahaparinirvana Stupa built on the site where Buddha attained Mahaparinirvana (passed away). Nirvana Temple has over 6 meters long statue of reclining Buddha, which was unearthed during the excavations of 1876. This reclining Buddha statue has been carved from Chunar sandstone, and it represents the dying Buddha reclining on his right side. An inscription below dates the statue to the fifth century AD. The remains of the Parinirvana Stupa and Parinirvana Temple, were covered with mound of bricks and surrounded by a dense forest at the time of its rediscovery by General Alexander Cunningham. Later the excavation work was carried on by Mr. A.C.L. Carlleyle.

Mathakaut Temple
Mathakaut Temple is one of the most famous and most visited shrines in Kushinagar. It is situated just 300 meters from Maha-Parinirvana Stupa. A black stone image of the Buddha in the 'Bhumi Sparsha Mudra' (means 'Kneel down Posture') was found during excavations at kushinagar. People believe that the last sermon of Lord Buddha was given here. This temple is called Mathakaut because the head of Lord Buddha rests on the ground in kneel down posture. 'Matha' is the Hindi word for 'Head'. This particular pose of Lord Buddha expresses the moment in his life just before his Enlightenment, when he called upon the Earth to bear witness to the pieties performed by him in his previous births. Therefore this statue and the shrine as a whole have a deep significance in Buddhism philosophy. The statue has been carved out of stones from the hills that surround Bodh Gaya.
