UP weavers got 6000 carore package from centre

With Uttar Pradesh vidhan sabha elections 2012 round the corner everybody is trying to please one community or the other in some way. This package of Rs. 6,000 Carores to the hadloom sector of Uttar Pradesh is also seen as a step towards gaining support of bunker community of Uttar Pradesh before UP assembly elections 2012.

The first question which comes to mind is who will benefit from this 6000 carore package which the centre has announced for the handloom sector or Bunker community of Uttar Pradesh. The beneficiaries and advantages would be:

Individual loan defaulters, who are not part of a cooperative for loan amnesty ,

There would be incentive for timely payment of loans

There would be price subsidy on yarn.

Since this is the time of Uttar Pradesh elections 2012 every move by every party is seen in association with the upcoming Vidhan sabha elections in Uttar Pradesh, and this is no different. According to other parties, this move is to win over the weaver community, comprising largely Muslims.

Earlier, Rahul Gandhi wrote a letter on 14th November that the Rs 3,000-crore package announced in last budget has not been implemented. Earlier, finance minister, Pranab Mukherjee had proposed a Rs 3,000 crore loan relief scheme for 15,000 weaver cooperative societies to help around 3 lakh handloom weavers. At a rally in Uttar Pradesh, Rahul Gandhi announced that, centre government is planning to transfer money to the deserving individuals and not through the usual state machinery. The possible mode for direct disbursement of the financial aid could be the "weavers' credit card". The card would be issued to eligible individual weavers who can access loans up to Rs 2 lakhs for three years. They are likely to get an interest subsidy of 3%.
