Alha and Udal were famous general of Chandela King Paramdi dev or Parmal. Udal full name was Udai Singh and he was younger brother of Alha. Alha and Udal were raised by king Parmal himself as their father, who was also a general was killed fighting for king parmal.

Alha and Udal belonged to Banaphar Rajput clan. Alha's mother name was Devaki and was a Ahir. The stories of bravery of Alha and Udal are part of folkfare in India, especially central India comprising Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar etc. Alha is one of the hero of Alha-Khand (also known as Parmal Raso). Alha Khand is very famous and is recited in Bundelkhand. According to Alha- Khand, Alha and Udal were such great fighters that even swords were defeated by them.

In my childhood, I didn't know about them that who is Alha-Udal. But now that I know who they really were, I can understand the meaning of those words. Stories about bravery of Alha-Udal are very popular in Bundelkhand region of India. According to one such legend, Alha was undefeatable, as he was made immortal by the goddess Sharda. Legends say that , he was such fearless that he gifted his head to mother goddess by cutting it with a sword. The goddess was happy with his bravery and devotion and made him immortal.

Alha had two maternal brothers Malkhan and Sulkhan. They were also known for their enormous strength. Acoorrding to another legend, Alha's sword, which wsa given to him by Parmal, the ruler of Mahoba and his uncle, was from heaven and no weapon could match the fury of that sword.
