History of Bara Imambara Lucknow Uttar Pradesh


Bara Imambara was built by Shia Muslims in the year 1783. Ordinary people from Lucknow worked whole day to build up Bara Imambara. It was made for the purpose of Azadari. Some construction is still going on in the imambara. All ordinary poeple were working for it to build and it was a project of Asaf-ud-Daula's to provide employment for people.

Bara Imambara shows the maturation of Mugha design and the architecture of Bara Imambara is namde as 'Badshahi Mosque'. It is said that there was a competition for Bara Imambara design and after holding the competition the design was selected, the winner of the architect contest was Kifayatullah which was very unique and whole design is built by him only. The main hall size of imambara is 50 by 16 and ceiling is 15 meters tall. There is no beams to support the ceiling. Main hall of Bara Imambara is the main attraction of it.

At Bara Imambara you will find eight surrounding chambers built at different heights. It has 489 identical doorways interconnecting to it, and it may be possible that it is the only existing maze in India.
