Eye discomfort during pregnancy is normal and is considered a part of the pregnancy process. Here is how to deal with this problem.

Once you have discovered that you are pregnant, it is time for celebration. Also, it is time you get prepared for a nine-month journey which will see several changes physically as well as biologically. Pregnancy is a complex biological process in which the fetus goes through several phases of growth and development. And you body while getting to adapt to these new developments goes through several changes which are normally described as symptoms of pregnancy. For example these pregnancy symptoms may include lower back pain, muscle cramps, swelling of the hands and feet etc. As mentioned, these symptoms are a result of the hormonal and bodily changes caused by pregnancy. There is nothing serious about these problems as they can be considered a part of healthy pregnancy.

One of the problems you may experience during pregnancy is swelling of the eyes. Eye swelling during pregnancy is nothing serious and you need not panic or mistaken it for other diseases of the eyes. Eye swelling may not be visible at all, but it can be serious enough to give troubles to you if you are wearing contact lenses. The fact is that the cornea becomes thickened as a result of the swelling and you may experience problems such as blurred vision and dry and itchy eyes. As a result, your contact lenses may not fit your eyes anymore. This seriousness warrants visit to a doctor's clinic two to three times during your pregnancy. The doctor will examine the changes in shape of your eyes and also conduct a vision test.

When you have serious discomfort on your eyes during pregnancy, your doctor may prescribe new contact lenses for you which have the right size and optical strength. These lenses will do well till your pregnancy last. After you have given birth, things that have undergone changes during your pregnancy will gradually return to normalcy. This means, the shape and power of your eyes will also get back to normalcy. As such, your old lenses will fit your eyes once again. This is why some women prefer to switch to glasses during pregnancy rather than getting themselves a new pair of lenses. And they get back to their lenses later on. The choice is strictly yours though. Nevertheless, you always go for eye check-ups once you have discovered even minor eye discomfort during pregnancy.
