Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan

The famous ancient temple of Lord Krishna ,the Banke Bihari temple is situated in an equally legendary place called Vrindavan in Mathura district of U.P.Vrindavan is said to be the place where the lord spent his childhood.The temple was built in 1864 and attracts scores of people from all over the world especially during Janmashtami,the day Lord Krishna is believed to have been born.

The place is well connected by all major cities and the nearest railway station is Mathura.You can also reach there by bus or local vehicles via Delhi or Agra.Due to huge settlement by people all these years the temple can be reached only after you cross numerous alleys where there are many shops selling puja materials and things for offering to the lord.There are souvenir shops too selling Radha Krishna idols.

The idol is said to have been discovered by a devotee,swami Haridas in Nidhivan and is worshipped in the temple everyday adorning the lord with new clothes and jewellery.The temple is opened for darshan from 7.00am to 12 noon and 5.30pm to 9.30pm.in summers and from 9.45am to 1pm and 4.30pm to 8.30pm in winters.
Aarti is performed everyday in the morning and evenings when devotees sing along hymns and offer 'prasad'.Some people are so much lost in the devotion that they start dancing and clapping and feel one with the God.
During Janmashtami the lord is swayed in a golden swing and special pujas are done adorning the deity with new clothes and jewellery.
During Holi too you can see the deity being offerd coloured powder as Lord Krishna is said to be very fond of the festival which he played with his friends and 'gopis'.
